As humans we are designed to adapt to change.

As humans we are designed to adapt to change. Our psychological make up of understanding feelings and motives, our ability to rationalize and problem solve and the fact that if we have to change, we can and will do so. The last point is the most interesting. If we must change, we do. Before we know we must change, we simply resist.

In general people change due to intrinsic (self-driven) reasons or external factors (context). Individuals will change because they might have set a goal or want to achieve or be better than before. Most people change if it is forced onto them rather than change and lose what they have.

Even more so, groups of people or systems tend to change if there is something to lose, since we have a shared view of what is happening, and everybody holds onto their own needs or beliefs. Inherently we are selfish and as groups we become more so.

Why would we change due to COVID-19? There is much to lose: your health, a loved one or your way of life.

The reality is we probably won’t change, if we do not understand what we can lose. Until that realization sets in, we will resist, we will break the rules and we will justify it according to our individual and selfish nature.
